S.A.A. Extra: Dept. of Labor Redefines “Spouses” for FMLA Purposes

(6/27/14)  (From the U.S. Department of Labor)  The United States Department of Labor has published a public Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to revise the definition of “spouse” under the Family and Medical Leave Act.  The proposed new rule would recognize same-sex spouses and negate the effect of inequalities based on residency in states where same-sex marriages are not recognized.

S.A.A. Extra: Court Decides Oregon Same-sex Marriages Will Continue

(6/6/14)  (From The New York Times)  In an update to a story we previously covered on Sex Across America, the Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a move to halt same-sex marriages in Oregon.  The state is now solidly among 19 states allowing gay marriages and Oregon’s attorney general has confirmed that they have no plans to appeal the ruling.

S.A.A. Extra: Renowned Anti Sex Slavery Activist Resigns

(5/30/14)  (From US News and World Report)  Somaly Mam, who has been internationally honored for her work against sexual slavery, suddenly resigned this week from the New York-based foundation she helped found after reports alleged that she had distorted aspects of her personal history. Among the claims now being questioned is the basis for her memoir, “The Road of Lost Innocence,” in which she said she was abused and sold into prostitution as a child.
